The history of the Liber Augustalis, from manuscripts to printed editions, make it possible to follow the path of adaptation of the glosses into two apparatuses, the Glossa Ordinaria by Marino da Caramanico and the Lectura Peregrina by Andrea da Isernia, which includes the notes of other jurists. Although moving in the wake of the literary genres of the school, this kind of interpretation is eminently practical. The aim is to create a link between the Liber Augustalis - still in force but often obsolete - and the law promulgated by Angevin sovereigns, fragmentary and unsystematic. What explanation do science and naturalists mature in the face of the disorienting epiphany of monstrous births? What lags and discontinuities are generated - in this path that is anything but linear and continuous - by a religious discourse that insists for a long time on the sacramental question and on the baptism of this unusual creatures? These are upheavals that make explicit the attempt by theology to still maintain an active dialogue with a medical discipline that in the modern age is gradually becoming the protagonist of an impetuous development.

The discovery of graffiti in the early years of the twentieth century by the folklorist Giuseppe Pitré left by prisoners of the tribunal of the Spanish Inquisition in Palermo has been followed by more extensive investigations in recent years. These images and words have added a concrete and particular dimension to Sicily’s position at the crossroads of the Mediterranean. As well as images of saints and naval battles are to be found inscriptions not only in Italian, Sicilian and Latin but also in English and Hebrew.
